What veneers are, and what they require

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth. Veneers can correct discolouration that whitening cannot touch, close small gaps, repair chips, and improve the shape or alignment of teeth that are slightly crooked.

What matters, and what is frequently glossed over, is that most veneers require some permanent removal of enamel. It is a modest amount, but it does not grow back, and the tooth will need a veneer or a crown for the rest of your life. Some cases can be treated with minimal or no preparation, and where that is possible we will do it — but it is not possible in every case, and any practice promising it universally is overstating what is possible.

This is a decision worth making slowly and with full information, which is why we discuss the trade-off directly rather than presenting veneers as a purely additive procedure.

Designing a smile that fits the person

The most common failure in cosmetic dentistry is teeth that are technically well made and obviously wrong — too white, too uniform, too long, or simply belonging to a different face.

Natural teeth are not identical to one another. The two central incisors are slightly wider than the teeth beside them, the edges follow the curve of the lower lip when you smile, and the colour is not flat but graduated, lighter at the edge and warmer near the gum. Reproducing that variation is what makes a result convincing.

Age matters as well. A shade appropriate for someone in their twenties looks conspicuous on someone in their sixties, and there is a version of cosmetic dentistry that reads instantly as work rather than as teeth. Prosthodontic training covers the esthetics of the whole face — how the teeth relate to the lips, the midline, and the way you actually smile — and that broader view is what keeps the result believable.

For patients in their fifties, sixties, and seventies, the aim is usually a return to how the teeth looked twenty years ago, before wear and staining took their toll. That is a considerably more flattering outcome than the uniform brightness of a much younger mouth.

Alternatives worth considering first

Not every concern requires veneers, and we would rather talk you out of unnecessary treatment than into it.

Professional whitening handles most general discolouration at a fraction of the cost, with no removal of tooth structure. If colour is the only issue, start there.

Composite bonding can repair a chip or close a small gap in a single appointment. It does not last as long as porcelain and is more prone to staining, but it is reversible, far less expensive, and often entirely sufficient.

Clear aligners address crowding and spacing by moving the teeth themselves rather than covering them. When teeth are crooked, straightening them is frequently the better answer, and sometimes it is the only treatment needed.

Where teeth are worn or the bite is unstable, veneers alone would be treating the symptom. Those cases belong in a broader reconstruction plan, or the new veneers will chip exactly as the natural teeth did.
