General & Restorative Dentistry
Dr. Steven Berkowitz, DDS
Caring for families on the Upper West Side for more than three decades.
Background
Dr. Steven Berkowitz earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and his dental degree from Georgetown University School of Dentistry. He completed a general practice residency at the Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Ohio before entering private practice in the New York City area.
He has practiced on West 86th Street ever since. Over that time he has treated several generations of the same Upper West Side families — a fact he is more proud of than any particular procedure.
His approach
Dr. Berkowitz believes in solving each patient's problems in the most conservative way possible, and in providing care in an environment that is comfortable and unhurried. In practice this means recommending the smaller treatment when it will do the job, explaining the reasoning when it will not, and never proposing work a patient does not need.
It is a straightforward philosophy and an increasingly uncommon one. It is also why so many of the practice's patients arrived on the recommendation of somebody they know, and why a substantial number have been coming here for fifteen and twenty years.
Working alongside his son
Dr. Berkowitz now practices with his son, Dr. Jonathan Berkowitz, a residency-trained prosthodontist. For longtime patients this has been a straightforward change: cleanings, checkups, and routine care continue exactly as before, and when something more complex is needed, the specialist is in the next room rather than across town.
The transition of the practice to the next generation is deliberate and gradual. The same staff, the same office, the same standard — with the addition of specialty training that was not available here before.
